I know in the first post i said i was going to mostly be covering computer topics, then I realized; This is a blog, and far from a professional one at that, I can talk about whatever I want, so I’m just going to talk about some music I like, so to start off lets get this one out of the way.
I was tempted to do something a bit more obscure for the first album review, something where I could potentially have something novel to say about the album, a new take on a song ect. But I thought I might as well get this one out of the way.
10/10, anything less would be dishonest, in a general sense it's probably the greatest album of all time. Is it my favorite? Probably not. Is it overhyped? Depends on your taste in music but I would say no. Do I own this on vinyl? Not yet.
I'm not going to bother doing an objective take on any of the songs as those are a dime a dozen from anyone who's ever said anything about music. I'll run through the songs and tell you my own feelings. Speak to me is a great opener with a bit of every song to come thrown into a blender, Breathe is good but hits a bit close to home, On the run is just alan parsons having fun, Time hits WAY too close to home, but for an album whose songs all talk about the human condition as broadly as possible this is to be expected that atleast on of the songs hits hard. The Great Gig In The Sky may be one of my favorite vocal performances of all time, Money is way to catchy for its own good, Us And Them is amazing and strangely jazzy, Any Colour You Like is a great instrumental piece to pivot into Brain Damage, a fantastic song with the greatest album title drop of all time, into the greatest album closer of all time in Eclipse. If you would like a more objective in depth look into the album I would recommend the documentary by polyphonic An Exhaustive Exploration of Dark Side of the Moon.
While on the topic of the dark side of the moon this will probably be the only time I'll get to talk about covers and tributes to the dark side of the moon, in particular Dark Side Of The Moon Redux and Return To The Dark Side of The Moon. Return to Dark Side is a bunch of prog rock artists collectively covering the dark side and is a very nice listen if you already listened to the original a dozen times. Dark Side Of The Moon Redux is… well… very different from what you might expect. It's a spoken word acoustic(?) rendition by roger waters that has some… well controversial reception, personally, I think it's interesting. I’m not going to immediately shit on it because it's different from the original. Artists can have wildly different takes on their own work and only a few of those takes are going to resonate with the general public, Dark Side Of The Moon started as a live project that they would play at concerts, refining it every time they played it until finally going into the recording studio. Anyway This post isn't really about redux and this isn't the place to get caught up on it. Maybe when I run out of things to talk about I'll come back to it when I have a more developed opinion. Anyway Darkside, great album if you haven't listened to it you should at least consider it.
